Point 9 — Finite vs Non-Finite — Special Cases
What do we see?
A 3:1 split of finite to non-finite options, or a 2:2 split.
What do we understand?
- If the ratio is 3:1 and the outlier is non-finite: check whether a finite verb already exists in the clause. If not, eliminate the outlier — this is really a 1:2:1 case, and the SVA outlier among the rest is the answer.
- If no outlier exists (2:2): check whether a finite verb already exists in the clause. If not, pick the finite verb that fits by tense and agreement. If one does, pick the valid participle or infinitive.
