Point 4AStrong Transitions

What do we see?

A strong transition (however, for example, on the contrary…) inside the options, with the punctuation shifting from one side of it to the other. Not applicable to though — see Point 5.

What do we understand?

Step 1: check for ICs on both sides of the blank.

  1. If yes: retain options with a period/semicolon/colon/dash; eliminate options creating a run-on or comma splice; eliminate options lacking punctuation on either side of the transition.
  2. If not: choose the option with commas or dashes on both sides of the transition.

Step 2: if stuck between two options, decide whether the relationship runs 1→2 or 2→3.

Step 3: place the transition accordingly — between 1 and 2: IC . / ; / : IC, ST; between 2 and 3: IC . / ; / : ST, IC.
